If you smoke or use tobacco products, your risk of developing gum disease can be higher because you are more susceptible to infection. There are also plenty of other downsides to smoking including:

  • Bad breath
  • Loss of bone volume
  • Receding gums
  • Sores that are slow to heal
  • Reduced sense of taste and smell

We always encourage any of our patients who smoke to try and quit the habit to reduce their risk of gum disease. Tobacco use is also linked to mouth cancer, as well as other dental problems, so it really is wise to cut it out. We can help you quit by giving you plenty of useful information and advice, and supporting you through the process.
